THE PROJECT

The Zane project was established by Genova International School of Soccer in August 2009 in Zane, Vicenza, northen Italy. The program is an exclusive operation that has been designed to cater for promising young footballers wanting a career pathway. Players are chosen from Genova International academies worldwide through the Genova and AS Roma camps. For the duration of the project, they are given a chance of a lifetime: to be able to live their dreams, living the life of a professional Italian footballer, living and breathing calcio football everyday at the highest level possible.

Chosen players are registered/signed with the local team Faizane fc (1931), affiliated team of Vicenza Calcio, run by former Italian national player and serie A player Mauro Zironelli - ex Fiorentina (UEFA finalist 1990), Vicenza, Modena, Venezia, Pescara - and now current coach of serie C team Bassano calcio national youth. Former GISS Australia head coach Joe De Martino, current head coach GISS Italy, runs the Faizane team and the team that plays weekly games
against clubs of serie A, B, C, and D teams.

Season 2010-11 began with a bang: after an intense pre-season, with the team run by UEFA A licenced coach Enrico Bortolas, ex-coach of Cuneo, Savona, Voghera, Cossatese, and Vercelli. The 2010-2011 team is made up of some of last year's players and some new, coming from Mexico and New Zealand.

The first game on Saturday, September 3, saw Zane lose 2-0 against serie B Cittadella primavera (reserves) team. A great performance when compared to last May, losing 6-0 against the same team.

THE PROGRAM

Players are working 6 days per week with double sessions most days. Mornings include gym and pool sessions. The afternoons are always on the field at the stadium complex in the sports village in Zane, with training under both Mauro and Joe. League games are played every Saturday while official friendlies are played every Wednesday against teams of serie A, B, C, and D clubs. Sunday is players day off, where often they are taken to watch serie A and B teams play live, or excursions are set to visit different towns in the Veneto region. School and Italian lessons are a compulsory part of the program, with some players finishing their schooling abroad and online.

OBJECTIVES
  • to create a pathway for players to achieve their dreams of playing football at a professional level
  • to assist participants to develop and rapidly adjust and orient to the Italian football culture.
